FAQ
Steel and precast detailing, answered
The questions fabricators, precasters and builders ask before they send a package.
What is steel detailing?
Steel detailing turns an engineer’s design drawings into shop drawings, erection drawings and machine files a fabricator uses to cut, drill, weld and assemble each steel member. A detailer models the whole structure in 3D software such as Tekla Structures, resolves every connection, and issues drawings for each assembly and part.
What is precast detailing?
Precast detailing produces the shop drawings used to cast concrete panels, columns and beams off site. Each drawing shows the element’s dimensions, reinforcement, cast-in plates, lifting and bracing inserts and openings, so the precaster can build the mould and pour without guesswork.
What is the difference between shop drawings and erection drawings?
Shop drawings show how each member or panel is made: dimensions, holes, welds, reinforcement and cast-ins. Erection drawings show where each piece goes on site, using piece marks, grid references and the installation sequence.
What do you need from me to quote?
Send the structural and architectural drawings (IFC or latest revision), any 3D models and the specification. Tell us your required deliverables and dates. We reply with a fixed-scope quote and programme.
How long does steel detailing take?
It depends on tonnage, complexity and how complete the design is. A small portal-frame shed can be issued within days; a multi-storey commercial frame is staged by level or zone so fabrication can start while detailing continues. We confirm a programme with every quote.
Where is Torvane based?
Torvane is based in Indonesia. We detail for steel fabricators and precasters in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Indonesia, to each market’s codes, section catalogues and drawing standards, in metric or imperial.
Which software do your detailers use?
Our primary platform is Tekla Structures, with Advance Steel, AutoCAD and Revit available. We exchange models in IFC and deliver NC1/DSTV, DXF and KISS files for CNC machinery and MIS software.
Do you provide connection design?
We model connections to the engineer’s loads and standard details and coordinate calculations for review. Final design responsibility and sign-off stay with the project’s structural engineer.
